Writing a CV for Austria

If you have a Lebenslauf written for Germany, you are most of the way there. The structure, the length, the photo and the signature are the same. What differs is vocabulary, the names of qualifications, and one habit that catches people out: Austrian adverts frequently state a minimum salary, and are more likely to expect you to respond to it.

What you send

  1. Bewerbungsschreiben — one page.
  2. Lebenslauf — one or two pages, signed.
  3. Zeugnisse and Dienstzeugnisse.
  4. Nachweise for relevant training.

What catches people out

  • Adverts often quote a KV-Mindestgehalt — the collective-agreement minimum. Address it in the letter rather than ignoring it.
  • Matura, not Abitur. HTL, HAK and HLW are the school types a reader will recognise; spell them out for a German or international employer.
  • Lehre is the apprenticeship, and Lehrabschlussprüfung the qualifying exam.
  • Jänner, not Januar, if you are writing dates out in words.
  • Austrian employers issue Dienstzeugnisse; the coded register is read much as in Germany.
