What matters in this role

  • Scale and constraints, not just the stack. “Rewrote the sync layer” means little; “rewrote the sync layer serving 40,000 daily users, cutting p95 latency from 1.8s to 320ms” means something.
  • What you owned end to end. Engineering managers read for scope of responsibility before they read for technologies.
  • The technologies you would be happy to be interviewed on, listed separately from the ones you have merely touched.
  • Evidence you have worked with other people: code review, mentoring, incident response, working with product.

Common mistakes

  • A skills section listing thirty technologies at implied equal depth. It reads as noise, and it invites a question you cannot answer.
  • Describing the team’s achievement without saying what you did in it.
  • Listing every side project. Two good ones with links beat eight abandoned repositories.
  • Burying the most recent and most relevant role under a long graduate job from 2016.
