What matters in this role

  • Your professional registration and its expiry, near the top. It is the first thing checked and the most common thing missing.
  • The clinical settings you have worked in, named specifically — acute medicine, intensive care, community nursing, theatres. A ward manager is matching you to a rota.
  • The size and type of the unit, and your level of responsibility on it. “32-bed acute medical ward, deputy shift lead” tells a reader more than a paragraph.
  • Mandatory training, language levels and continuing education, so nobody has to ask.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the job description of a nurse rather than what you personally have done and changed.
  • Leaving out placements. For newly qualified nurses, placements are the experience section.
  • A two-column design for a large employer’s portal, where the parser may interleave the columns.
  • Omitting the reason for a gap in registration or practice, which is the one gap that genuinely does need a line.
